Dear winter, it's not you. It's me.

Dear winter, it's not you. It's me.

A love letter to New York, a breakup letter to winter, and a few places I'd rather be when the snow starts falling.

There's a very specific moment that every Western and Central New Yorker knows.

The patio furniture has been put away. The sun is setting before dinner. Someone in the office mentions the possibility of snow, and suddenly everyone has an opinion about what kind of winter we're in store for.

We love it. I promise, we really do.

We love our four seasons, we love our football Sundays, and the particular brand of resilience that comes with living somewhere that measures snow in feet instead of inches.

But somewhere between the first lake effect snow warning and the realization that we'll soon be scraping ice off our windshields before work, a thought begins to creep in.

What if I just went somewhere else?

Somewhere with cobblestone streets instead of salted sidewalks. Somewhere where the only ice we're concerned about is the kind floating in a drink. Somewhere the most difficult decision of the afternoon is whether to order another glass of wine or spend another hour by the water.

And while we wouldn't trade where we live for the world, there's nothing wrong with wanting to see a little more of it.

The case for having something to look forward to

Fall occupies an interesting place on the Western and Central New York calendar. Summer feels like a distant memory, the holidays are approaching, and winter is waiting sometimes not so patiently around the corner.

It's also when many of us start thinking about what we'd like next year to look like.

Maybe it's finally taking that European vacation you've been talking about for years. Maybe it's celebrating a milestone somewhere unforgettable. Or maybe it's simply deciding that next winter, you'd rather be looking at the ocean than a mountainous snowbank at the end of your street.

Whatever the motivation, there's something exciting about putting a trip on your calendar. And if you're looking for a little inspiration, AAA Travel has a few ideas worth daydreaming about.

Portugal is calling. And it has wine.

Imagine trading gray skies for the colorful waterfront of Porto, where centuries-old buildings line the Douro River and the city's famous port wine is practically an invitation to slow down.

From there, picture wandering Lisbon's historic neighborhoods, discovering the medieval charm of Évora and making your way south toward the Algarve, where dramatic coastal cliffs meet the Atlantic Ocean.

Portugal offers the kind of vacation that appeals to travelers who want a little of everything: history, incredible food, beautiful scenery, and enough time to actually enjoy it.

I, myself, have been eyeing the Sunny Portugal with Porto trip through AAA Member Choice Vacations. For 13-days and 12-nights, you can experience the country's diverse landscapes and cultural treasures. And because the trip is thoughtfully organized, you can spend more time deciding which local specialty to try next and less time figuring out how to get from one city to the next.

For those of us accustomed to planning our lives around weather forecasts, that sounds like a pretty nice change of pace.

Or perhaps the Mediterranean is more your speed.

Of course, maybe your ideal escape involves a little more sea breeze and a lot more European glamour. Enter Viking's Iconic Western Mediterranean cruise.

Over eight days, this journey explores some of Europe's most celebrated coastal destinations, including Spain, France, Monaco, and Italy. Imagine being in Barcelona, where colorful architecture, bustling markets, and centuries of history compete for your attention. From there, the journey continues along the French coast, with opportunities to discover the canals of Sète, the natural beauty of the Calanques and the unmistakable elegance of Monte Carlo.

And then there's Italy. Because really, is there ever a bad time to start thinking about Italian food, Renaissance art, and the possibility of an afternoon spent wandering through Tuscany?

The appeal of cruising is that you can experience several remarkable destinations without constantly packing your suitcase and coordinating transportation between them. Your accommodations travel with you. The scenery changes. And every new port offers a new opportunity to explore.

It's a very different experience from shoveling the driveway before your morning coffee.

The best time to dream about travel? Before you need the escape.

Here's the thing about planning a vacation; the earlier you start thinking about what you want, the more time you have to make thoughtful decisions. And that's especially important when you're considering a bigger trip.

Do you want a guided vacation or the freedom of a cruise? Would you rather spend two weeks exploring one country or experience several destinations in one journey? Are there particular excursions you don't want to miss? Should you add a few days before or after your trip?

These are exactly the kinds of questions a AAA Travel Advisor can help you answer. Rather than spending hours comparing itineraries, accommodations, and transportation options on your own, you can work with someone who understands the differences between travel styles and can help match an experience to your interests, budget, and priorities.

A AAA Travel Advisor can also help you consider details that are easy to overlook in the excitement of planning, including travel protection, flight arrangements, and what support may be available if your plans change.

Because while a vacation should feel like an adventure, the planning process doesn't need to become one.

Don't worry, we'll be back.

There's a lot to love about living in Western and Central New York, even when winter ruthlessly tests that relationship.

We'll still cheer for the Bills. We'll still complain about the weather while insisting that nobody else understands how to drive in snow. And we'll still appreciate those first warm days of spring more than people in sunnier climates probably ever could.

But maybe this fall, instead of simply preparing for another wild winter, we give ourselves something a little different to look forward to.

A sunset over the Mediterranean, a glass of port wine in Portugal, a historic city we've never explored. A stamp in the passport and a story we haven't lived yet. After all, winter will be here whether we're ready for it or not.

Your next adventure doesn't have to wait.

Explore possibilities with AAA Travel and let a AAA Travel Advisor help turn your next "Wouldn't it be nice if..." into "We're going."
