Medicare-eligible adult needing new coverage turns to AAA

At the age of 86, Georgia Mulley of Canandaigua realized that it was time for something new.

Mulley, who celebrated her 87th birthday in August, had been working with the same Medicare consultation service for over 20 years. Initially, their plans were "affordable" and "very helpful", covering all medical expenses at the hospital, doctor, or any other appointment. However, a projected increase to $360 a month forced Mulley to seek alternatives, stating, "I can't afford that".

Mulley’s need for a more affordable plan was serious, driven by challenging financial and personal situations. She had recently moved to Canandaigua from Penn Yan to be closer to her grandson, who was facing his own serious health issues, necessitating a living space that was accessible for him. This move significantly increased her expenses. This stark reality meant "it doesn't leave very much left for me to pay my bills," requiring her to live a "very frugal" lifestyle.

In her search for new coverage, Mulley contacted AAA Medicare. She initiated contact with AAA Medicare after seeing that they offered medical insurance information. During her conversation with David Kamholz, a AAA Medicare representative. Kamholz presented Mulley with options, including Blue Cross Blue Shield coverage, which held the possibility of good coverage without high out-of-pocket costs.

Mulley has since transitioned to the Excellus BlueCross BlueShield plan through AAA Medicare and is "very happy" with it. She praises Excellus for making "everything so much easier" and for being "very good at covering my appointments". Mulley is also in the process of applying for additional help with co-pays through the University of Rochester, an organization that previously assisted her with a medical bill. Kamholz provided guidance on the necessary paperwork for this application.

Mulley's grew up resilient and self-reliant. Raised on a farm, she learned to be "efficient and sufficient". This upbringing instilled in her a deep value for frugality and a cautious approach to new situations, especially financial and medical decisions like Medicare.

Mulley's determination, which she attributes to her mother, has been a driving force throughout her life.

Despite numerous health challenges, Mulley demonstrates extraordinary self-management and a proactive approach to her well-being. She controls her diabetes primarily through diet. This decision is informed by her mother's experience, who suffered severe complications from diabetes.

Mulley's personal health journey also includes a series of significant injuries. In preparation for potential surgeries and to maintain her strength, Mulley performs exercises at home, embodying her philosophy that "you have to do for yourself". Her dedication to self-strengthening is evident as she maintains the goal of walking independently, sometimes with a cane and sometimes without, even though she still uses a walker as a precaution.

When asked to summarize her experience with AAA Medicare, Mulley offered an unequivocal endorsement: "There's no one better to deal with that are honest and good and kind than AAA".

Her trust in AAA extends beyond Medicare, as she has also had her roadside coverage through AAA for 29 years. Mulley's story is a testament to the peace of mind and tangible benefits that compassionate, expert guidance can bring, even in the face of significant personal and health challenges.
