AAA: Families Set Sail Over February Break
The booming cruise industry has families saying ‘Bon Voyage’ as they set sail for mid-winter break, which kicks off on President’s Day. This year, cruising is the top option for area travelers over February school break based on regional AAA bookings, bumping Orlando to the number 2 spot. The popularity is right in line with AAA’s Cruise Forecast, which projects 21.7 million Americans will go on ocean cruises in 2026 after 20.7 million set sail in 2025, which was better than expected. AAA is forecasting that the year-over-year increase will be a 4.5% bounce from 2025 to 2026.
“These numbers reflect the growing demand for ocean cruises, which offer something for everyone in the family,” said Josie Nicotra, Director of Travel at AAA Western and Central New York. “Cruising is ideal for multi-generational travel, which is a popular trend as families look to make memories together.”
Aside from cruising, there’s an evident trend this month as families are looking to escape a harsh winter and head to warm destinations. In fact, all of the top destinations for February break among local travelers are to warmer climates, according to AAA bookings. Top destinations for February break include:
- Caribbean cruises out of Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, and Port Canaveral
- Orlando
- Cancun
- Aruba
- Punta Cana
- Honolulu
The Caribbean is by far the most popular cruise destination for Americans, capturing 72% of U.S. cruise passengers who are drawn to shorter, convenient cruises. That’s why Miami, Port Canaveral, and Fort Lauderdale, all in Florida, are the busiest cruise ports in the world. “Cruises are popular with families who enjoy the inclusive nature of cruising, which offers meals, entertainment, activities, and multiple destinations all in one trip,” explained Nicotra, noting that the first quarter of the year is known as Wave Season, when most cruise lines offer discount pricing and special deals.
Orlando’s theme parks are also a draw for families looking for excitement, while the beaches of Cancun, Aruba, and Punta Cana are calling local residents who are drawn to their warm sand and blue water. Honolulu, Hawaii, wraps up the list at number six.
For families sticking closer to home and bearing the cold, sites across New York and Pennsylvania are expected to be busy for either the long President’s Day weekend or the full week.
