The holiday season is delivering a gift for drivers as the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline dropped 4 cents since last Monday to $2.91. Gas prices are the lowest they have been in four years. The national average has stayed below $3 since December 2nd, the lowest it has been since May of 2021. As a record number of travelers prepare to hit the road later this month, they will be paying less than they were during the last holiday season when the national average was $3.04 to close out 2024.
New York prices are also down, as drivers keep an eye on the pump in hopes that local prices will continue to drop. Crude oil prices remain on the lower side, trading at $57 to $62 this morning. Sluggish gas demand and cheaper-to-produce winter blend gasoline are also contributing to the drop at the pump.
Diesel prices are also on the decline. The national average is $3.63 – down six cents from last week. The New York average is $3.92, down one cent from a week ago.
When it comes to EV charging, the national and state averages for L2 commercial electricity remain steady. Today’s national average per kilowatt hour of electricity at a public EV charging station is 39 cents. New York’s rate is 38 cents – the state is home to 17,438 chargers. To conserve fuel, motorists should map routes, avoid peak traffic times like rush hour, and combine errands into one trip while using cruise control when possible. Drivers should also make sure tire pressure is at the vehicle’s recommended level for the best gas mileage while removing any unnecessary and bulky items from the car since it takes more fuel to accelerate a heavy vehicle.
