AAA Western and Central New York, along with law enforcement, has kicked off its annual “School’s Open, Drive Carefully” campaign as back-to-school season gets underway. With school buses back on the roads, commuters should give themselves extra time and be prepared for bus traffic. Motorists should also be cognizant of less-experienced student drivers returning to high school and college.

AAA’s School’s Open, Drive Carefully campaign was launched nationally in 1946 to help reduce the number of school-related pedestrian injuries and fatalities. Now, 79 years later, AAA clubs across the country continue to promote the campaign annually to remind motorists to watch out for school-age children.

“Safe drivers are a key component to keeping our students safe as they make their way to and from school,” said AAA Western and Central New York Senior Communications Specialist Mark Gruba. “As another school year gets set to begin, our message is simple – make student safety your top priority.”

"Our patrols are going to be out in full force and you’re going to notice a big increase in the presence you see around the school areas,” said Captain Matthew Kreuzer of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. “We will have zero tolerance for any violations in those school zones including speeding, stop signs and distracted driving.”

“We all need to be mindful of the changes in traffic patterns and the increase in young pedestrians on our roads,” said New York State Police Troop E Public Information Officer Lynnea Crane. “When a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended you must stop – no exceptions, no excuses.”

As children go back to school, AAA encourages drivers to take extra care around school buses and driving in residential areas. Here are some helpful reminders:

  • Always stop for a school bus when the lights are flashing
  • Slow down
  • Remove all distractions from the driver – put cell phones down
  • Do not pass other vehicles
  • Obey crossing guards at all times
  • Expect the unexpected
  • Check your mirrors before moving
  • Teach your children the rules of traffic safety

“Drivers have a massive responsibility to keep themselves, their passengers, and other motorists safe,” said AAA WCNY Lead Driving Instructor Richard Hyman who trains teens on safe driving. “As a new school year begins, we encourage all drivers, especially our new student drivers, to make good decisions behind the wheel.”
