Travelers Trade Chocolate Bunnies for Beaches This Easter
Easter travelers are setting their sights on sunshine, cruises, and culturally rich destinations as they make plans to celebrate spring. From theme parks and tropical beaches to European river cruises and historic cities, local travelers are embracing both relaxation and once-in-a-lifetime experiences this Easter travel season.
“After a long winter, travelers are eager to get away and enjoy warmer weather,” said Josie Nicotra, Director of Travel at AAA Western and Central New York. “Easter remains a popular time for family travel, and we’re also seeing continued interest in cruising and guided tours that make planning easier for multigenerational groups.”
Here’s a look at the top destinations for local travelers this Easter, based on AAA Western and Central New York bookings this travel season:
- Orlando, FL – cruise and tour packages
- Caribbean cruises departing from Fort Lauderdale and Miami
- Amsterdam – river cruising
- Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
- Rome, Italy
- Honolulu, HI – cruise and tour packages
- Cancun, Mexico
- Aruba
Warm weather destinations remain a popular choice for Easter travel, with cruising especially appealing to local travelers looking for convenience and value. Florida remains a top choice, serving both as a vacation destination and a major cruise departure point.
Aside from flying, Easter road trips are also popular as families take advantage of school breaks and shorter travel times. Beach destinations in Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina, along with popular regional attractions, continue to draw travelers who prefer to drive.
Road trips across the state to places like Niagara Falls, Finger Lakes, Thousand Islands, and New York City are also popular this spring. Gas prices typically increase each spring though local prices are much higher than a year ago as the conflict in the Middle East has sent crude oil prices higher to the $95-$115/barrel range. As of today, the national average for a gallon of unleaded is $3.98, up 82 cents from this time last year. The New York average is $3.92, up 81 cents from last year. In Buffalo, the average is $3.91, in Rochester it is $3.93, and in Syracuse it is $3.88.
Motorists can benefit from comparing pump prices before filling up with the AAA Mobile App for iPhone, iPad, and Android — a convenient option to find the lowest gas prices in a given area. Plus, the app is the quickest way to request roadside assistance, map a route, find discounts, or book a hotel.
